New assistant principal at Hewlett Elementary School

Hewlett High School alumnus Ross Cohen will join Hewlett Elementary School as an assistant principal on Oct. 21, as the Hewlett-Woodmere School District Board of Education approved his appointment on Sept. 18.

Cohen has been in education for more than 17 years. His immediate previous position was program administrator of Eastern Suffolk BOCES. He directed teacher training and development for all kindergarten through 12th grade teachers, developed the instructional vision and action plan, led the literacy initiative, and developed coding, robotics, literacy, and mathematics curricula.

Before that he was the assistant principal for the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Bellport Academic Center. He oversaw all aspects of the program, supervised and observed teachers and service providers, developed a team-oriented approach to student wellness and support, and supervised the Committee on Special Education process. Cohen also spent four years at the New York City Department of Education as the Assistant Principal of P077K.

His teaching experience includes being a special education teacher at Manhattan Hunter Science High School, a hospital schools teacher at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and an elementary substitute teacher as Public School 276 in Brooklyn.

He holds an advanced certificate in educational leadership from CUNY Hunter College, a master’s degree in secondary English education from New York University and a bachelor’s in communication from Boston University.
