Wantagh Fire Dept. responds to house fire in Levittown

Fire billowed out of a detached garage behind the home at 3077 N. Jerusalem Road on Monday, where several propane tanks in the garage created a dangerous environment for firefighters at the scene.

At approximately 7:45 a.m. on July 26, the Wantagh Fire Department was notified of a house fire at 3077 N. Jerusalem Road in Levittown. According to a report compiled by Public Information Officer Kevin Regan, dispatcher Lauren Fortuna had received several calls reporting that the fire was coming from the garage.

When Third Assistant Chief Bill Stevens arrived at the scene shortly after, the report stated, a detached garage will fully engulfed in flames and the house was starting to catch fire.

Wantagh’s Engines 4, 5 and 7 arrived at the scene next and began extinguishing the flames in the garage and on the first and second floors. Crew members from Ladder 1 and 2 conducted searches of the dwelling and found no occupants, the report said.

While several propane tanks and a 275-gallon oil tank in the garage created “challenging” conditions for firefighters on site, the fire was declared “under control” after 40 minutes, the report said. No one was injured as a result of the blaze. 

The Levittown, Bethpage, North Bellmore and Seford Fire Departments also responded to the scene. East Meadow, Bellmore and Massapequa Fire Departments were on standby, the report said.

The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire. It does not appear to be suspicious at this time.
