Wantagh man arrested after allegedly assaulting police officer

A Wantagh man was arrested early Sunday morning after he allegedly assaulted a police officer, according to a Nassau County Police Department release. 

Tristan Persaud, 24, was charged with second-degree assault and was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Sunday.

Police arrived at a residence on Red Maple Drive on Sept. 26 around 12:57 a.m. after an individual reported a "disturbance." According to the release, police heard loud screaming coming from the home when they arrived.  Upon further investigation, police found Persaud was screaming and being restrained by his family members inside the home.

Police allegedly placed the man into custody shortly after and seated him on the floor, at which time he stood up, fell backward and kicked an officer in the face, the release stated.

The officer sustained abrasions on his face and blurred vision as a result of the incident. He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Persaud was also transported to a nearby hospital for assessment.
