Wantagh students design at home

Although classroom learning has been suspended, Wantagh School District elementary students are using their time at home wisely to participate in a number of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) projects and challenges.

Students from Forest Lake Elementary School, Mandalay Elementary School and Wantagh Elementary School competed. Under the direction of STEAM teacher Kaitlin Humphrey, students logged onto the PBS Design Squad website and chose an engineering/building project. They improvised, using household materials to complete their projects.

Humphrey urged students to use their collaborative skills by working on the project with family members. After they were done, students uploaded Flipgrid videos to the PBS Design website, explaining their projects and the materials they used to complete it.

“The goal of the activity was to keep students thinking creatively and critically through use of materials at home,” Humphrey said.

Students are also being encouraged to improve coding skills on the code.org website; play PBS Engineering virtual games and Breakout EDU digital games; and participate in the Wantagh Family STEAM Challenge to make interesting recycled items while learning from home.
