Weathering the coronavirus pandemic as a school community

Posted

The month of April seems to have flown by, despite current circumstances. As the days melted into weeks, many brave people worked hard to keep the general population healthy, fed and comfortable during the coronavirus pandemic, and they continue to do so in spite of the danger they knowingly put themselves in.

While these heroes face battles every day to protect our neighborhoods from the most unlikely foe, many of us have been hunkered down in our homes, biding our time until the worst passes.

Students and teachers at Lawrence High School have been kept busy by their school work, virtual hangouts with friends, and various past times that allow them to stay entertained and productive in their spare time (a commodity that seems to be abundant nowadays).

It has been said by many that absence makes the heart grow fonder, and it seems that we are learning that lesson the hard way during the pandemic.

Modern-day technology has allowed us to stay in touch with our peers and teachers, however, and this gift lessens the strain of physical distance on us.

Lawrence High teachers went above and beyond to demonstrate their love for their students by creating a video for the student body: a montage of teachers giving their best to other Lawrence family members from their own quarantine bunkers.

It was a heartwarming display that many students enjoyed watching; in the future, we can be sure to expect a student response video that is just as touching.

Though many aspects of life have all but grinded to a halt, the college admissions process still demands much attention. As difficult as it may be for seniors to focus on academic matters during this strange season, the time is nearing for students to decide where to go to college, and we’re already beginning to see tons of students committing to universities in order to meet the May 1 deadline (though certain schools have elected to push back the deadline in light of recent events).

Lawrence’s class of 2020 will be attending Stony Brook University, Pratt Institute, the University of Delaware, Ithaca College, Haverford College, and Temple University, among other schools.

Wherever the seniors end up, whether it be a two-year university, a four-year university, a trade school, or the workforce, there is no doubt that they’ll thrive like the Lawrencians they are.

“These times are troubling for us all,” we have all heard that statement and similar sentiments so often the words could lose their meaning; however, these refrains massively understate the uncertainty and fear that many of us are feeling.

In spite of it all, we, the students and teachers of Lawrence High School will continue to make the best of this unpleasant situation, knowing that eventually, we’ll reach the light at the end of the tunnel.

In the meantime, we’ll continue to keep ourselves occupied and speak digitally. We’ll weather the next few months together, as a community.
