A Girl Scout troop in North Bellmore had fun ahead of the holiday season, and learned the value in giving back to the community.

Daisy Troop 946, which consists of 1st grade students in the John G. Dinkelmeyer Elementary School, ran an extensive food and supply drive while working towards their badge for “needs and wants.”

“The badge was to learn about the difference between needs and wants,” Dana Carullo told the Herald. Carullo’s daughter is part of the troop.

“We also talked to them about the importance of giving back to the community,” she added.

The troop didn’t focus on Thanskgiving items like many other drives around this time of year do. Rather, they collected everything from cleaning supplies, to canned goods, to pasta.

“I had seen on Facebook that the [Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s] Community Cupboard was in need of donations,” Carullo said, which is ultimately where the donations were brought.

“They’re really sweet girls, and they work hard on their badges,” Carullo shared. “It was really nice.”
