Elmont American Legion holds small Veterans’ Day ceremony

Rather than hold a large parade with students from all five Elmont elementary schools for Veterans’ Day this year, the American Legion Post 1033 held a small ceremony on Nov. 11 to honor those who have served their country.

At the event, American Legion members shared prepared speeches emphasizing the importance of Veterans’ Day, which originated as Armistice Day in 1919 — one year after the end of World War I. Billy DePietro and Kevin Tirman also served as riflemen, and Girl Scouts from Troop 1335 decorated Veterans Square with poppies, the official flower of military service.

Elmont students who could not attend the ceremony this year due to coronavirus mandates, meanwhile, created videos thanking the members of the American Legion for their service.
