Franklin Square 9/11 ceremony to be held with Covid-19 restrictions

The Franklin Square and Munson Fire Department’s annual Sept. 11 ceremony will look a little different this year, as the fire department must adhere to social-distancing guidelines.

This year’s ceremony, which will be held at Rath Park on Sept. 13 at 6 p.m., will not include a Town of Hempstead show mobile, and clergy members, elected officials and dignitaries will instead be stationed at the gazebo. There will still be chairs surrounding the Sept. 11 monument for family members who lost a loved one in the terrorist attacks, and fire department members will be in the fenced-in area surrounding the monument.

Everyone is welcome to attend the ceremony, but they must wear masks, stay behind the fence and maintain social-distancing guidelines. Naple Avenue will be closed from Jefferson Street to Claflin Boulevard to leave guests with adequate room to social-distance.

Elmont fire department officials, meanwhile, were expected to announce their plans for a Sept. 11 ceremony on Sept. 6, after the Herald went to press.
