Franklin Square home destroyed by fire

Nida Yasir saw the home she lived in for 23 years — and brought her daughter home from the hospital to — go up in flames on Jan. 28 at 10:12 p.m.

“It’s definitely been hard,” she said. “I spent my entire life there.”

Her family rented the house out in August, she said, and does not know what caused the fire. It is now under investigation by the Nassau County Fire Marshal, according to Franklin Square Fire Commissioner Christopher Howard.

Officials from the Franklin Square Fire Department were on the scene, at 62 Monroe Street, “pretty quickly” after it broke out last Thursday night, Yasir said, and they were assisted by firefighters from West Hempstead, Elmont, Garden City and Lakeview. Together, Howard said, they were able to extinguish the fire shortly after midnight.

The house, however, suffered heavy fire and water damage.
