Franklin Square schools to close on March 13

Schools in the Franklin Square School District will be closed on March 13, after a staff member at the Washington Street School informed district officials that he or she is being tested for coronavirus.

In a letter sent to parents on March 12, Superintendent Jared Bloom noted that a relative of the individual, with whom he or she has had direct contact, has tested positive for the virus. Out of “an abundance of caution,” he wrote, the district will be closed for the day, while officials work to “perform a deep cleaning of all school buildings and buses.”

The district is expected to re-open on March 16.

It has already postponed all field trips and evening activities for the month, according to a post on its website, and district officials said they would work with building administrators and Parent Teacher Associations to reschedule any events.

The Elmont School District has also cancelled all after-school activities taking place after 6 p.m. indefinitely.

And at the Sewanhaka Central High School District, Superintendent James Grossane wrote that there are currently no confirmed cases in the district, but will close all five high schools for the day as well for a deep cleaning.
