Island Park receives more than $30K in CARES Act funds

The Village of Island Park will receive a relief grant of more than $30,600 to help reimburse unexpected expenses that were brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

The grant funding was made possible through the Federal CARES Act, which provided the Town of Hempstead with $133 million in funds last year.

“The $30,000 grant provides reimbursement for costs incurred due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” Mayor Michael McGinty said. “Cleaning supplies and services, personal protective equipment and other mitigation efforts will be reimbursed with this funding.  Additionally, we thank our town leaders for their work in making sure our small businesses had necessary PPE to keep employees, customers and staff safe.”

McGinty added that village officials have also purchased necessary equipment to keep its staff, public works employees and members of the Island Park Fire Department safe and healthy during the pandemic.

Using CARES Act funds, the Town of Hempstead has provided more than $800,000 in relief grants to assist local villages, including an additional $19,926 provided to Island Park last August. The deadline to use the funds was extended to 2021, and McGinty thanked Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin and Town Councilman Anthony D’Esposito for their efforts in securing the funds for Island Park.

Clavin thanked Sen. Chuck Schumer for securing the extenstion of the deadline to use CARES Acts funding when announcing the allocation of money to Island Park.

“I also commend the Village of Island Park and its workforce for continuing to serve the community throughout the Covid-19 pandemic,” Clavin said, according to a news release.

D’Esposito said that because he is an Island Park resident, it meant a great deal to him to secure the funding.

“As a longtime resident and former chief of the Island Park Fire Department, I know how hard Mayor McGinty and the village have worked throughout the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said, according to a news release. “I am proud to partner with Supervisor Clavin to provide more than $30,000 in grant funding to help the Village of Island Park in its ongoing response during these uncertain times.”
