New Hyde Park Memorial High School addresses bomb threat

Out of an “abundance of caution,” New Hyde Park Memorial High School students, faculty and staff were evacuated from the building on May 23 after the district received a swatting voicemail of an alleged bomb threat.

Sewanhaka Central High School superintendent James Grossane said the Nassau County Police Department responded quickly and sent inspectors from the emergency service unit, bomb squad canine officers and POP officers who worked with Homeland Security to secure the building.

Grossane reported no devices were found and the threat was deemed no credible.

To further reassure the community, police officers were stationed at the high school the following day on May 24 so everyone who reentered the building felt safe.

Grossane said the district plans “extensively” for situations such as this bomb threat.

“We were highly complimented by the Nassau County Police Department and Homeland Security,” Grossane said. “While it’s something that we never like to experience at all, the fact that what we have planned for worked quickly and effectively, we are pleased that that they were so complimentary of our administration and staff.”
