A Uniondale man was arrested for attempted murder on the night of Jan. 7, Nassau police said.
Milton Mendez, 45, was charged with attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal obstruction breathing/blood circulation.
According to detectives, Mendez was allegedly involved in an argument with a woman, 39, in a Uniondale home. As the argument escalated, police said, he allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife and slashed the woman multiple times on her face and hands. Police said the woman had multiple cuts and lost a significant amount of blood.
A girl, 9, allegedly witnessed the attack, and according to detectives, she allegedly tried to stop Mendez. He allegedly grabbed her around the neck and applied pressure, reportedly cutting off her breathing. Police said he also allegedly punched the girl on the right side of her head, causing pain and swelling.
The girl allegedly continued to try to take the knife away from Mendez, according to police, and he allegedly cut both her hands. The girl and another woman in the house, 17, exited the home and called 911, detectives said.
Officers responded to the scene, where they allegedly heard the 39-year-old woman screaming for help inside the house. Police said Mendez allegedly entered a hallway holding a knife covered in blood and refused to comply when officers ordered him to drop the knife. He allegedly approached the officers, according to police, and the officers were able to disarm and arrest him.
Both the woman and the girl were brought to a nearby hospital for evaluation and are both in stable condition, according to detectives.
Mendez will be arraigned on Jan. 8 at First District Court in Hempstead.
