Covid forces Lawrence football forfeit

The Lawrence High School Golden Tornadoes varsity football team was forced to forfeit its Sept. 18 road game vs. Friends Academy because the team, except for vaccinated members, had to quarantine due to a positive Covid-19 case, Superintendent Dr. Ann Pedersen said.

The quarantine for the players that were in close contact with the person who tested positive ends on Sept. 22, and the next game, which is a home contest against Seaford on Sept. 25, would not be impacted, she said.

On Sept. 15, the school district reported that it was aware of two Covid cases, one student and one staff member, at the high school. Because of privacy laws it is unclear if those cases are related to the football team.

“We wish both cases a quick return to good health, Pedersen stated in the Sept. 15 text that was sent to the school community. “Individuals impacted by these cases have been notified. Masks are a must in our schools.” She added that Covid cases are reported to the Nassau County Department of Health and on the district’s website, lawrence.org.

Beginning on Sept. 20, all Lawrence employees must show evidence of a vaccination or a negative PCR test on a weekly basis, Pedersen told the Herald. PCR, stands for polymerase chain reaction. The test is to detect genetic material from a specific organism, such as a virus like Covid.
