Hewlett-Woodmere School District Superintendent Dr. Ralph Marino Jr. said in a districtwide email to parents that a Hewlett High School student has tested positive for Covid-19.

Marino said in the email that the last day the student was in school was Sept. 9. The student began feeling ill on Sept. 10 and was immediately tested for Covid-19.

"The results were received the evening of Sept. 16 and the student communicated with the district today," Marino stated. "The student will not be permitted to return to school for at least ten days from the start of symptoms, including at least being 72 hours fever-free without medication."

After learning of the test, Marino said the district immediately contacted the Nassau County Department of Health for further guidance.

"The NCDOH is in the process of completing contact tracing and any individuals considered exposed to Covid-19 will be notified by the NCDOH directly," he said in the email. "Due to the safety procedures and protocols outlined in the district’s reopening plan, the NCDOH has advised that the high school may remain open. No other district buildings are affected."

Marino added that the district will continue to work closely with the county's Department of Health.

"Please know that there is nothing more important than the health and safety of our students and staff," he said. "The district is committed to following all of the necessary protocols to limit student and staff exposure and will continue to thoroughly clean and disinfect all buildings each evening as outlined in our reopening plan."
