The Roosevelt School District welcomed JROTC students from 15 high schools across the Northeast on March 1 for its second annual JROTC High Stakes Competition.

Teams competed in VEX Robotics, vying for a spot at the 2025 VEX Robotics World Championship in Dallas, Texas, this May.

Roosevelt emerged victorious and will advance to the international event—the world’s largest robotics competition.

“The energy in the room was palpable as students showcased their engineering skills and put their designs to the test,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Shawn Wightman. “We are incredibly proud of our JROTC Robotics team for organizing such a remarkable event and wish them the best of luck at the world championship.”

Leading up to the competition, teams designed and built their own remote-controlled robots. The event featured a series of challenges assessing the robots’ strength, durability, and agility.

Along with Roosevelt, participating schools included Theodore Roosevelt High School (Bronx), Fort Hamilton High School, Francis Lewis High School, Central Regional High School, Hempstead High School, John Dewey High School, Morris Academy High School, Martin Van Buren High School, Port Richmond High School, Thomas Edison High School, St. Francis Xavier High School, Uniondale High School, Wyandanch High School, and Queens Metropolitan High School.

Roosevelt’s JROTC team is now gearing up for the championship, set for May 9-11 at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas, where top robotics teams from around the world will compete for the title.
