Activities shift mood from anxiety to buoyant

Since the last column I have wrote, I have seen the light and positivity that many of us Lawrence High School students have been longing for. First and foremost, sports were able to resume this year.

The condensed winter sports season was played in February. This included boys and girls basketball, track, and bowling.

More recently, the rescheduled fall season which began in March, has now come to an end. Football, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls volleyball, tennis, and cross country were played. Some of these games were able to be livestreamed on YouTube via Lawrence Athletics, thanks to the school’s media club.

Many Lawrence teams have strived despite this difficult year. The boys volleyball team under coach George Klein played hard this season and were able to make it all the way to the semifinals of the Nassau County playoffs.

Although they were not able to continue, their valiant efforts are recognized and they truly made their school proud! This statement also rings true to the boys soccer team that were able to make it to the first round of their playoffs.

Student Government Association and senior officer elections also took place. The elected officers wasted no time and have gone straight to work. The SGA and senior class officers collectively created a schoolwide spirit week. They even came to school and decorated it in a socially distanced manner so in-person students could feel that blue and gold spirit.

This spirit week included days such as fancy dress up day, pj/crazy hair day, meme day, character day, and blue and gold day. This was repeated for two weeks to include the blue and gold hybrid students.

Students could participate online and in class. Students with the best outfits received prizes such as gift cards. Many spirits were raised.
The senior class was also able to plan and execute a senior ice skating event this past March!

The newest event that was planned by both the senior class and SGA was the first ever drive-in movie event. Juniors and seniors were able to park their cars and enjoy “Spider-Man: Homecoming” with their friends. All the officers want to continue to plan many more school-wide events that get everyone engaged and active.

Many new and exciting changes have taken place at Lawrence High. What once began as a confusing, anxious time has now blossomed into an optimistic present and future.

I personally can’t wait to see what the rest of the year brings. Let’s continue to stay safe, healthy and have that Lawrence pride. Go Tornadoes go!
