Effective today, Friday, May 29, tennis courts at all five buildings in the Bellmore-Merrick High School District became available to the public as part of Nassau County’s “Phase 1” reopening, Director of Athletics Eric Caballero announced in a letter to parents.

Hours of operation will be from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and only singles play is allowed. Courts are open for tennis only and players must maintain social distancing guidelines at all times and avoid sharing equipment.

Changing ends of the court is not permitted, players are encouraged to use hand sanitizer as well as use their racquet and/or feet to pick up tennis balls used by the opponent.

In Caballero’s letter, he wrote: “For those who wish to use our facilities, it is imperative that you adhere to the guidelines set forth by the Nassau County Executive [Laura Curran], as well as the U.S. Tennis Association. Please be mindful that we remain steadfast in maintaining the health and safety of our school community. As such, these decisions are made with careful consideration to recommendations made by the CDC and the NYS Department of Health.

“Our district will continue to provide security at all locations with rules and guidelines strictly enforced by security personnel. Signage detailing guidelines of use will be posted prominently at each location. Enjoy the use of the tennis courts and most importantly be safe and stay healthy,” Caballero concluded.
