Lynbrook firefighters remember the fallen

Six Lynbrook volunteer firefighters have died in the line of duty over the years, and the Lynbrook Fire Department members got together on Oct. 18 to remember them.

Led by Chief Michael Brooks, the LFD members and junior firefighters marched from the Earle Avenue parking lot to the Lynbrook Firefighters Memorial on the corner of Sunrise Highway and Earle Avenue for the annual memorial service commemorating those firefighters who died over the years while serving the village.

Also attending the ceremony were Lynbrook Mayor Alan Beach and the board of trustees, Lynbrook Police Chief Brian Paladino, Assemblywoman Judy Griffin, Nassau County Legislator William Gaylor, Hempstead Town Councilman Anthony D’Esposito and Town Clerk Kate Murray.

During the service, Brooks gave a short history on each of the six firefighters that died in the line of duty. Beach also spoke about the firefighters and the sacrifice they made. Assistant Chiefs Chris Kelly and Danny Ambrosio presented the department wreath, which was placed in front of the stone marker that lists the names of those who were lost.

The former members of the LFD that have died in the line of duty are Lieutenant Fred Schnoor, who died on May 31, 1932;  John Smillie, who died on July 13, 1939; Chief Raymond Abrams, who died on June 30, 1946; William H. Koch, who died on April 30, 1963; Peter J. Moody, who died on May 2, 1963; and Joseph C. Fischer, who died on May 3, 1963.

“Lynbrook firefighters today remember those that gave their lives for this Fire Department and the Village of Lynbrook,” Abrams said, “and we will always remember and honor them for making the supreme sacrifice.”
