The Historical Society of the Merricks has been selected by store leadership at a local Stop & Shop to benefit from the supermarket chain’s Community Bag Program.

For the month of August, the historical society will receive a $1 donation from each purchase of a $2.50 reusable Community Bag at the Stop & Shop store at 2160 South Merrick Mall in Merrick.

The durable, reusable shopping tote makes it easy for patrons to give back to the community while supporting the environment, according to Stop & Shop’s website. “In this time of uncertainty due to Covid-19, supporting local nonprofits has never been more important,” wrote Program Manager Sarah Scott in an email to Larry Garfinkel, the society's president.

Each month, leadership at Stop & Shop stores chooses a local nonprofit to be the default beneficiary of the Community Bag Program. The donations will help support groups focused on education, health and wellness, hunger relief and military or veterans organizations. The society’s name will be posted on the store’s reusable bag rack starting next month.
