Top 5 Things to Know About the Fifth Annual Sea Cliff Fun Run

Posted

The Sea Cliff Fire Department is once again lacing up its running shoes for a good cause. The fifth annual Sea Cliff Fun Run returns on May 17, with a certified 5K course winding through the village. Here are the top five things to know about this beloved community event.

1. It started with a tribute — and grew into a tradition.

The Fun Run was created to help support the Whitting family following the death of their son. Over time, the event has evolved into a broader fundraiser for community causes, including the restoration of the fire department’s historic bell and clock, which date back to the 1800s. "The bell had been cast in 1833 by a man who, in his youth, had been an apprentice to Paul Revere,” said Phil Como, department. “The bell and the clock are in great condition right now. Thanks to last year’s run, the bell and clock are now fully restored.

2. This year’s race supports the Sea Cliff Fire Department.

Funds raised by this year’s run will go toward firehouse projects not covered in the village’s budget. “There are a lot of projects that we’d like to do for which there are no budgeted funds,” Como said. “So what we do is fundraising.” The department hopes to raise about $10,000 this year, although in years past they have managed to raise as much as $60,000.

3. The race is certified and open to all.

Unlike last year’s “uncertified” run, this year’s 5K has been officially measured to the inch. Runners of all levels are encouraged to participate, from high school athletes to casual joggers. "We get a very good turnout across the age and social spectrum,” said Como, noting that local residents, first responders, and children are all welcome to participate. Only the first 250 registrants may participate in the event. To register for the race, visit RunSignUp.com/Race/NY/SeaCliff/SeaCliffFunRun.

4. The course runs through scenic Sea Cliff streets.

The run begins and ends near the Sea Cliff Yacht Club. Runners will pass Memorial Park, run up Sea Cliff Ave to take a right onto Carpenter Ave, and take two more rights onto Downing Ave and Glenlawn Ave respectively. They will take a final right onto Glen Ave, before take a left on 8th Ave and then turning right one final time to end up back at the Yacht Club. The event includes “rolling security,” with six police officers and a team of volunteers helping manage traffic and ensure safety.

5. It all ends with a party at the Yacht Club.

Post-race festivities will be held at the Sea Cliff Yacht Club’s patio, featuring food, drinks and live music from Chicken Head. “It’s just a nice Sea Cliff day, all to the benefit of the fire department,” said Como. There will also be an awards ceremony for a wide range of standout runners, followed by a silent auction as well.

The race begins at 10:30 a.m. Registration details can be found at RunSignUp.com/Race/NY/SeaCliff/SeaCliffFunRun. Tickets cost $35, and additional donations are possible through the previous link.
