Oceanside High School has reached an agreement with Oceanside Sanitation District No. 7 to send special needs students from the Life Skills Program to work at the district’s headquarters.

“We’re giving them office experience to help with their life skills,” Oceanside Sanitation Board of Commissioners Chairman Austin Graff said. “They will be filing and doing other jobs. If the kids need to learn skills, as a community, we should try and help.”

The Life Skills Program teaches students with special needs how to work in various fields and offers them learning experiences through on-the-job training. The Oceanside School District has partnered with many businesses throughout the community to offer a wide variety of jobs for students.

Graff said that three students will come to the district’s headquarters once or twice a week throughout the school year, where they will partake in office work. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Phyllis Harrington said she was pleased to add Oceanside Sanitation to a growing list of businesses participating in the program.

“For many years, businesses and organizations throughout our community have graciously opened their doors to students in our Life Skills Program so that our young people could gain valuable job experience,” she said. “Currently, we have a number of job sites that our students go to, including Oceanside Sanitation. We could not be more grateful to the businesses and individuals who make this happen.”
