Bellmore F.D. issues safety advisory ahead of Oct. 12 coastal storm

The Bellmore Fire Department is urging residents to take immediate precautions as a powerful coastal storm is forecast to hit Long Island on Oct. 12, bringing heavy rainfall, strong winds up to 60 mph, and possible coastal flooding across the South Shore.

Meteorologists warn that the nor’easter could cause power outages, downed trees, and localized flooding, especially in low-lying communities such as Bellmore, Wantagh, and Merrick.

“Our department is fully staffed and ready to respond, but residents can play a critical role by staying informed, planning ahead, and avoiding unnecessary risks during the storm,” said Chief of Department Brandon Conway.

Officials recommend securing outdoor furniture and garbage cans, clearing gutters, charging phones and flashlights, and preparing an emergency kit with food, water, medications, and first-aid supplies. Residents are also encouraged to park cars on higher ground and check in on elderly neighbors or those with special needs.

During the storm, residents should stay indoors, avoid windows, and refrain from driving through flooded streets. The department also advises avoiding the use of electrical appliances during lightning activity and reporting any downed power lines while maintaining a safe distance.

After the storm passes, residents should steer clear of fallen wires and storm debris, avoid re-entering flooded basements until power is confirmed off, and allow emergency crews to clear roads and hydrants.

For emergencies, residents should call 911. Non-emergency inquiries can be directed to the Bellmore Fire Department at 516-221-4418 or the department’s main line at 516-783-6600. Additional contacts include PSEG Long Island for power outages at 800-490-0075 and the Nassau County Police First Precinct at 516-573-6100.
