Huge crowds on the beach and boardwalk in Long Beach have worried city officials, who are considering stricter actions to keep the number of sunbathers lower during a current heatwave and the coronavirus pandemic.

John McNally, executive assistant to the Long Beach City Manager, said Monday morning officials are closely monitoring the situation, even though this is a workday.

It's still pretty hot out," McNally said. Temperatures were in the mid-90s at midday.

On Saturday night, crowds close to 1,000 people were gathered on the beach and boardwalk, many of them not observing social-distancing rules. Police reported some loud music, use of alcohol and fights between some younger people.

Long Beach has established regulations to keep beaches below 50 percent capacity, to and to require social distancing.

There were no arrests. County Executive Laura Curran has called for more social distancing.
