Long Beach man arrested in Valley Stream after reckless driving

A Long Beach man who Nassau County police said was driving at a “high rate of speed” while weaving in and out of traffic on Merrick Road in Valley Stream Tuesday was arrested after fleeing on foot when his car slammed into a building, causing damage.

Police said offices on routine patrol noticed a 2013 Mercedes Benz traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on Merrick Road. They said the vehicle was weaving in and out of traffic and did not stop after officers activated their lights and sirens.

The said the car crashed into a building are 906 West Merrick Road, and that the driver fled on foot. Police said that with the assistance of the Aviation Unit, the driver was arrested after a short chase without incident.

He was identified as Travis Whitfield, 25. Police said he lived in Long Beach but did not provide an address.

Whitfield was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree unlawful fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle, and multiple vehicle and traffic infractions. He was to be arraigned on the charges in First District Court in Hempstead Wednesday.
