Severe storms move into southern Nassau County

Expect thunderstorms, high winds, large hail, and maybe a tornado

People may have to hold onto their hats — and just about anything else — today as the National Weather Service warns a squall of severe thunderstorms are expected to invade.

The storms could produce damaging winds, large hail, and even the possibility of a few tornadoes for South Shore communities like Long Beach, Lido and Oceanside. Wind gusts could exceed 58 mph, and hail could be up to 1-inch in diameter.

Highway crews in South Shore Nassau communities are standing by, officials said. Sewers in Long Beach have already been drained to make way for possible incoming water.

But all of that bad weather is expected to clear out by Tuesday morning.

"It is critical that New Yorkers use caution today and stay prepared as severe weather is likely to impact many parts of the state," Gov. Kathy Hochul said, in a statement. "The storm system moving through New York has the potential to cause power outages and downed tree limbs and power lines, and I am urging anyone in the path of these storms to keep a close eye on the weather and be prepared to act quickly if severe weather strikes."
