Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Centre's 'Mitzvah Day' helps children in need

The Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Centre’s religious school students, their families and teachers came together on Jan. 5 for a community service project.

Hazzan and Religious School Director Bonnie Zakarin organized a “Mitzvah Day,” which helped the temple’s families ring in 2020 positively.

Participants made and donated no-sew fleece blankets for children as part of Project Linus, which has a mission to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.”

The mission is also to provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for the benefit of children.
