Nassau County police arrested an Inwood resident at 10:40 p.m. on April 13 for driving while intoxicated after the man  allegedly left the scene of a vehicular accident at 679 Rockaway Turnpike in Lawrence.

Police responded to the call and found a red Ford pickup truck at the intersection of Wheelock Avenue and West Broadway in Inwood. The pickup truck was on Wheelock Avenue, facing south on the north side of the road. Inside the pickup truck were two women and three young children.

After finding the person who’s vehicle was struck and the subsequent investigation, police said that the pickup truck was driven by Julio Cesar Portillo, 50, of West Broadway at the time of the accident, and it was determined that at the time of the accident, he was intoxicated. The children are 1, 5 and 9. No injuries were reported. Portillo was taken into custody, without further incident, police said.

Portillo is charged with  three counts of driving while intoxicated, three counts of aggravated driving while intoxicated – with a child passenger less than 16 (Leandra’s Law), three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, and multiple driving infractions.

Arraigned on April 14, he was released on his own recognizance. His next court date is April 22. Portillo is being represented by the Legal Aid Society of Nassau County.
