Long Beach Schools to honor class of 2020, athletes Friday night

They will not get to slam a high fastball into the stands for a late-inning win. But the athletes in the Long Beach school district will be honored nevertheless.

On Friday night, the district will turn on the high school stadium lights and display "2020" on the scoreboard.

The event will start at 8:20 p.m. and school officials are asking residents to flicker their lights on and off to show support for the athletes, who did not get to play their last high school spring season because of the Covid -19 pandemic. Officials also encourage residents to wear Long Beach apparel and send pictures of the event to Athletic Director Arnie Epstein at aepstein@lbeach.org.

The tribute was organized by athletic directors across Long Island to honor the Class of 2020 and our high school athletes, in particular the seniors, who have lost so much their spring season.

Pictures of the event will be taken and posted on the district’s website. School officials ask residents not to show up at the field or parking lot. For more information, visit lbeach.org.
