Long Island Rail Road peak fares set to return for Lynbrook, East Rockaway commuters

The Long Island Rail Road announced that as of March 1, peak fairs are returning for the first time since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

In announcing the return of peak trains, the MTA also revealed some planned discount rates for the trains, which it has advertised in local news outlets, including the Herald.

“Monthly ticketholders receive 10 percent off the March 2022 monthly ticket cost,” the MTA said in a news release. “The March monthly ticket, effective on March 1, is now available for purchase. Depending on where you travel, the monthly ticket saves you up to 61 percent off one-way peak travel.”

The company added that there is also a new option for semi-monthly riders, given that many people have hybrid or remote schedules in the wake of Covid-19. The LIRR has launched a new 20-trip ticket, that saves commuters 20 percent on regular peak fare prices. The ticket is valid for 20 peak one-way rides, or 10 round-trip commutes. As of March 1, the option is available on the MTA eTix app or at LIRR ticket windows.

LIRR ridership had decreased rapidly at the height of the pandemic and continued to decline in the months following, but after Covid-19 cases began decreasing and the vaccine was made more readily available, the LIRR slowly restored service, and the return of peak trains is another indication that commutes are beginning to return to a sense of normalcy.
