The members of Lynbrook American Legion Post 335 honor and mourn World War II and 101-year-old veteran Paul Pette, who died on March 7.
“Paul was a proud World War II veteran who dedicated his life to service, both in uniform and in our community,” Post 335 Commander Miriam Carpio said.
Pette, the oldest member of the Post, served as a corporal in the Army Air Corps' 20th Air Force, 13th Bombardment Wing, 9th Bombardment Group from 1943 to 1945. He was stationed on Tinian Island in the South Pacific, where the Enola Gay bomber took off to drop the atomic bomb on Japan.
Born in Cosenza, Italy, on August 29, 1923, Pette immigrated to the United States as an infant and was the oldest of four boys. After the war, he worked for Grumman Aerospace in Bethpage.
American Legion services will be held on Sunday, March 16, at 1 p.m. at Flinch and Bruns Funeral Home in Lynbrook.
Pette will be buried at Calverton National Cemetery alongside his wife, Edith.
“Rest in peace Paul, an American hero, and thank you for your service and sacrifice,” said Carpio.
