Thomas Mascia, the New York state trooper who was shot on the Southern State Parkway was released from the hospital on Nov. 1, after being shot two days earlier.
Coming out of Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow in a wheelchair, Mascia, 27, was cheered by a few hundred of his fellow state troopers.
Mascia made a vehicle stop on the Southern State Parkway thinking he was going to assist a stranded motorist, when he was fired upon and struck in the right leg near Exit 17 by West Hempstead around 11:45 p.m., state police said. He underwent surgery for his injuries.
"Anyone that would target a law enforcement officer is one of the most dangerous individuals in our society," State Police Superintendent Steven James said at a Oct. 31 news conference. "We will aggressively pursue every lead with the intention of apprehending the suspect."
State police described the alleged shooter as a dark-skinned man. He left the scene in a black car believed to be a Dodge Charger with a temporary New Jersey license plate — 9976336T. The vehicle also has what officials called custom matte gray dual exhaust tips.
State police said that anyone with information is asked called Troop L at (631) 756-3300. A $5,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction. COP SHOT also is offering a $10,000 reward.
