The end of August signifies the beginning of a new school year for districts on Long Island and throughout the state.
The North Shore School District is no expectation, with junior varsity as well as varsity sports starting this week alongside student and teacher orientations at the middle school and high school.
Here are three things happening at the North Shore School District this September.
1: North Shore football kicks off at home
The North Shore Varsity football team will begin its fall season against Plainedge at North Shore High School at 2 p.m. on Sept. 6. Last year, the team went 4-5 overall with a .500 record within its conference.
The Vikings will look to get revenge on a Plainedge team that beat them twice last year, shutting them out in a 35-point blowout in the regular season and following the win up with a 49-14 blowout to end the Vikings season last year.
Following the Sept. 6 game the Vikings will go on the road to Lawernece and then Malverne twice before returning back home to play Cold Spring Harbor on Oct. 4.
2: Back to school night
New as well as returning students and their parents will have the chance to tour the district’s three elementary schools: Glen Head Elementary School, Glenwood Landing Elementary School, and Sea Cliff Elementary School, North Shore Middle School and high school over the course of three separate Thursdays this September.
The district’s back-to-school night will begin at North Shore Middle School on Sept. 4, the three elementary schools on Sept. 11, and conclude with the high school on Sept. 25. These events are designed to give families the chance to connect with teachers and learn about the upcoming school year's curriculum and activities.
3: Movie night and barbecue
Glen Head Elementary School will host a Back-to-School Movie Night and Barbecue at Glen Head Field. The family-friendly event, scheduled for Sept. 12, is open to all students, parents and community members, and will begin at 6 p.m.
Attendees can enjoy classic barbecue fare before settling in for an outdoor movie screening at dusk. Families are encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs and picnic gear.
The celebration is intended to mark the beginning of the new school year as well as to foster engagement between parents, neighbors, and community members. Admission is free, and food will be available for purchase. In the case of inclement weather, the event’s rain date is the following week on Sept. 18.
