The North Bellmore School District will continue its special education summer school program this year, which will be the first in-person instruction in the schools since the Covid-19 closure in mid-March.

To ensure a safe learning environment for students and staff, the Bellmore Lions Club donated money for personal protective equipment (PPE) and other important items. Superintendent Marie Testa announced that the Lions contributed $2,500 to support the purchase of face shields, nurses’ gowns and thermometers.

In early June, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order allowing necessary special education instruction to take place in-person this summer. The Lions donation will help ensure that North Bellmore can hold the program while meeting all state and federal safety guidelines.

Lions Club Treasurer Nina Lanci, a trustee on the North Bellmore Board of Education, said that the continuation of services is important for students in the program, as is face-to-face interaction with teachers and aides. She added that the Lions wanted to do their part to ensure that those students could come to school and learn in a safe manner.

“It’s for our children and our staff,” Lanci said. “The Lions Club supports our school community, and we felt that this was an item that we should support. It may seem like a small gesture, but it’s something that we can do to help.”

The Lions also supplied pizza dinners for families in the North Bellmore School District amid the pandemic. Gift certificates to a local pizzeria were included with grab-and-go lunches provided to families by the district’s food services department.
