Chatterton Elementary School parents honor local heroes

A group of Chatterton Elementary School parents wanted to make sure local veterans didn’t go unnoticed amid the coronavirus pandemic. Since large gatherings, such as assemblies and observance ceremonies, are a thing of the past, the Veterans Day Parent Committee figured out another way to show their support.

U.S. Army veteran Lukas Gubba, his wife, Lori, and Jessica and Joshua Mack comprise the committee. On Nov. 7, the group invited fellow Chatterton families — including the Blochs, the Cilas, the Cuomos, the Dematos, the Diazs, the Knausts, the Lattanzios and the Pucellas — to assemble 100 flags in front of the school for its first-ever Field of Honor.

“The Field of Honor is a display of full-size, three-foot by five-foot flags,” Joshua explained, “and the purpose . . . is to give individuals the opportunity to publicly express their gratitude to a veteran, first responder, family member or friend.”

Proceeds from the project will be donated to Heal Our Heroes, The Wounded Warrior Project and the Bellmore-Merrick Community Cupboard. The flags will be displayed along the Merrick Avenue side of the school through Dec. 7.
