Merrick elementary schools kick off new year

The rainy skies didn’t dampen showers of happiness in the Merrick Union Free School District on Sept. 1 as children entered school for their first day.

Fostering a community of learners who are respectful, motivated, enthusiastic and creative is the focus for the school year.

“The teachers were hard at work over the past few weeks, getting the classrooms ready for the students’ arrival,” said Chatterton Principal Dana Bermas. “The building looks beautiful, and we are all excited to work together as a team to service the Chatterton Community.”
Although this year will still look different, faculty and staff members are committed to an exciting and safe learning environment.

“The health and safety of all members of the Lakeside community will be on the forefront of every conversation, interaction and decision we engage in this year,” explained Levy-Lakeside Principal Libby Trencheny. “With administrative support, our teachers will create warm, welcoming, and supportive environments to encourage a positive experience for all 600 students.”

“We strongly believe schools are responsible to support the academic, social and emotional needs of all students,” added Birch Principal Kerri Galante. “It is our commitment to educate our students with these goals in mind.”
