A John F. Kennedy High School student has reportedly tested positive for Covid-19, but due to the nature of the case, the Nassau County Department of Health has determined that the school can remain open.

The positive result was self-reported to school officials by a parent on Oct. 26. The student has not attended school since Friday, Oct. 23 and due to the “circumstances of this individual case . . . no additional action by the school district is required,” wrote JFK principal Gerard Owenburg in a letter to parents. “Bellmore JFK is not the source of transmission.”

The district has worked collaboratively with the Department of Health to complete a contact tracing investigation, according to the letter. Those that have been identified as a close contact of the student have been notified.

The student who tested positive must remain out of school for 10 days.

“As a reminder, what happens outside of school can significantly impact our schools and ability to remain open,” Owenburg wrote. “Please continue to stress to your children the importance of mask wearing and social distancing at all times. As always, we will continue to closely monitor cases and infection rates in our surrounding communities.”

Daily and nightly intensive cleaning of the building will continue as well, Owenburg wrote.
