After two weeks, it’s time for school

Both Oceanside and Island Park reopened the doors to their schools this week for the first time since Hurricane Sandy swept through the area.

Things were not quite normal for all students, though. Most schools in Oceanside were running on generators, and School 8 was not open. School 8 students were bused to School 6 for classes, and pre-k classes were not reopened yet. The district had 90 percent of students in attendance.

In Island Park, the Francis X. Hegarty Elementary School will be closed for three to six months. In the interim, students are having class at the Lincoln Orens Middle School.

To make up for the lost days, Oceanside had to cancel its February break. Schools will be open on Feb. 19 through 22, but closed on Presidents Day on Feb. 18.
