Brooklyn couple caught with loaded gun in Inwood

Two Brooklyn residents were arrested after being found with a loaded gun and a high capacity magazine in Inwood at 10:35 p.m., on June 30.

Nassau County police saw a gray four-door 2014 Mercedes Benz sedan in Inwood Park on Bayview Avenue after hours. The county park closes at dusk. The officers saw two people “moving around excessively,” police said, inside the car.

During the subsequent investigation, the police found a black Taurus 9-millimetter handgun that was loaded with a 12-round magazine, along with a high-capacity magazine with 25 rounds of 9-millimetter ammunition. The gun was found to be stolen from Charlotte, North Carolina in October 2020. Police also found two packaged oxycodone pills.

Ronald Taveras, 35, of Fountain Avenue, is charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, three counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, including one for a previous conviction on the same charge and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Shaquana Brown, 32, of Wortman Avenue, is charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a weapon, fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Taveras is being held on a $100,000 bond. Attorney Lori Golombek represents him. Brown is being held on a $30,000 bond. As of press time, she did not have a lawyer. The next court date for both is July 6.
