The Rockville Centre Lions Club held its first Walking Rally fundraiser on April 13, which raised roughly $12,000 for Mr. B’s all-inclusive playground. Teams of participants were given a list of clues to help them navigate a walking tour of Rockville Centre local landmarks and merchants, as they answered questions along the way.
The team that completed the course with the most correct answers in the least amount of time was crowned the winner. Kerinne Tollefsen, Carrie Alfano, Jenny Costaro, Jeanine Cerrabone and Tracey Cheesman completed the course, with no wrong answers, in a time of 72 minutes and 3 seconds to collect the first-place prize.
Beginning at Hickey Field on Sunrise Highway, the teams visited points of interest like the Phillips House, as well as local businesses, such as Kookaburra Coffee en-route to the final destination, Kasey’s Kitchen and Cocktails, where the Lions Club hosted a reception featuring raffle prizes donated by more local merchants.
The sold-out event was the idea of Rockville Centre Lions event organizer Michelle Sewell, who was excited to thank her organizing committee and the local merchants, who made the fundraiser a success.
“We hope the rally will become an annual event, not only for fundraising,” she said, “but to raise awareness of some of the village’s hidden resources, and especially our local merchants that give so generously to the community.”
