Last week, Rockville Centre School District parents took part in a community forum focusing on the district’s proposed plans for reopening in the upcoming school year. It was hosted virtually by Emma Travers and Laura Burns, co-presidents of the Council of PTAs, and district leaders addressed “How to safely teach our children in a time of Covid” by answering questions sent in by parents and other community members. The forum took place two days before the district’s deadline to submit its proposal to the state. more
Conor Semple was known among friends and family as someone who brought people together. A lover of sports and large gatherings, the 2011 South Side High School graduate regularly organized some kind of social event. Last month, those friends and family came together to celebrate the life of Semple, who died unexpectedly on July 19, at age 27. more

Tropical Storm Isaias, a swift-moving temptest that slammed Nassau Tuesday, knocked down more than a thousand trees and some 338 electric and phone wires here, said County Executive Laura Curran during a news briefing Wednesday morning. more
As Tropical Storm Isaias barreled across Long Island Tuesday, it hit Rockville Centre particularly hard, causing the entire village to lose power by late afternoon. The coronavirus pandemic has presented new challenges to local community centers, including the Sandel Senior Center and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Center in Rockville Centre. Nassau County has responded by distributing $45,000 in federal grant funding to the centers to help them better serve residents during this time. more
