V.S. District 13 students raise spirits during time of crisis

Looking to raise spirits among its students and staff during this time of uncertainty, all four of Valley Stream District 13’s elementary schools hosted their own virtual spirit week. Each day featured a new theme, and students were encouraged to share photos on Twitter tagging their respective school’s handle or using the hashtag #VS13STRONG.

“We're happy we have such creative students, parents and staff to keep our school and community connected,” Schools Superintendent Dr. Constance Evelyn said. “We want to convey the message to our students that even though things can feel scary and overwhelming right now, we’re still a family that learns together and is here to support one another.”

Parents were asked to send a picture of their child's “spirit” to their teacher via the Remind app or email to be shared on twitter for parents, students and staff to enjoy. While all schools shared similar themed days such as Pajama Day, Wacky Wednesday or Crazy Hat Day, each school had a few of their own unique spirit days, such as Wheeler Avenue Elementary School’s  Rainbow Day, during which students displayed rainbows through shared drawings and apparel.

Howell Road Elementary School had Tone It Up Tuesday when students were encouraged to exercise and play outdoors. Dever Elementary School had A Work of Heart day, during which students created blue and pink hearts to display in their windows to show their support for our first responders and healthcare workers. Dever students also participated in Fancy Friday, when students were encouraged to dress their best.
