Hempstead Town has given preliminary approval to a deal that will pave the way for a 50-year-old Long Beach company, ChemRX Pharmacy Services LLC, to move its operations to Uniondale, taking 125 jobs with it.

Long Beach's economy is suffering job losses as a result of the coronavirus that has closed restaurants and bars since March. Retail stores were allowed to provide curbside service only last week. Long Beach's unemployment rate had been low, but rose about a point since March.

John McNally, executive assistant to the Long Beach City Manager, said the city has not heard from the company or the IDA.

Company officials were unavailable for comment. A person who answered the phone at the company earlier this week said, "None of the papers have been signed yet."

The Hempstead Town Industrial Development Agency last week gave preliminary approval to allow Angion Biomedica Corp. a biopharmaceutical company and its affiliated landlord, to renovate a Uniondale building that, once completed, will permit ChemRX to occupy 60,000-square-feet, currently used by Lab Corp. of America, which is moving its Uniondale operations to New Jersey in June.

ChemRx provides long -term care pharmacy, provides prescription and non-prescription drugs, intravenous medications, durable medical equipment items and surgical supplies to nursing homes and other care facilities. It is a subsidiary of PharMerica Corp., a Fortune 1000 company based in Louisville, Ky.

The preliminary approval was granted by the IDA at a teleconferenced meeting on May 28. The benefits are subject to further staff review, a public hearings and final approval. The necessary renovations for ChemRX will include 20 HVAC units and a new roof for the building.
