Malverne Cub Scouts Pack 24 prep for second cleanup at Tanglewood Preserve

Malverne Cub Scouts Pack 24 is preparing to take part in another cleanup at Tanglewood Preserve in Rockville Centre on March 22, at 9 a.m.

Last year, the scouts collected roughly 70 lbs. of garbage, which comprised of plastic bottles, broken glass socks and soda cans. Pack 24 Chairman Zeeshan Humayun said that the group hopes to continue their focus on community service.

“We have a lot of newer scouts, so we want to give them that exposure,” Humayun said. “We want our scouts to know that this isn’t just a one-time thing, and that there will always be a need to keep our environment clean.”

Pack 24 now has 29 scouts, and they will be joined by their parents and adult leaders to assist them during the cleanup, which members range from kindergarten through sixth grade. Participants will receive a certificate to recognize their efforts of community service and to advance in the scout ranks. Scout leaders will discuss the significance of the event, and then members of the preserve will lead the way for the cleanup. The real reward for the cleanup, Humayun said, is for the scouts to develop ideals that can continue outside of the pack.

“A lot of the parents and scouts took those principles to heart last year,” Humayun recalled. “For us, it’s about teaching our scouts the values of being a good citizen, and how we can promote them in everyday life. We’d like for our scouts to continue those ideals at home and in school.”

Pack 24’s upcoming events include Astronomy Night on Friday, and a camping trip at Greis Park in Lynbrook from April 25-26.
