A Queens man allegedly drowned in the body of water at Hempstead Lake State Park while paddleboarding, according to New York State police.

On May 23, state police officers responded to investigate a reported drowning at the lake. They determined that Jing Li, 39, of Flushing, was paddleboarding with his two young children on Hempstead Lake at around 5:45 p.m. when the paddleboard capsized, and Li went underwater.

New York State Park police, Rockville Center police, the Nassau County Police Aviation Unit, the Freeport Fire Department, the Lakeview Fire Department and the East Rockaway Fire Department responded to the scene.

Li was found in the lake a short time later, and was transported to Mercy Medical Center, where he was declared deceased. Li’s two children were assisted to the shore by a nearby individual in a kayak and were not injured.
