Rockville Centre resident appointed executive director of special education for Nassau BOCES

Rockville Centre resident Susan McNulty has been named executive director of the Department of Special Education by the Nassau BOCES Board of Education, starting July 1. She will oversee one of Nassau BOCES’ largest departments, serving more than 1,500 students with special needs in center- and district-based programs throughout Nassau County.

“During her time at Nassau BOCES, Ms. McNulty has proven to be an outstanding administrator,” Dr. Robert R. Dillon, district superintendent, said. “Her background and work ethic are impressive, and her thorough understanding of the needs of our students make her an exceptional fit for the position.”

McNulty, who currently serves as vice president of the Rockville Centre UFSD Board of Education, joined Nassau BOCES in 2016 and has more than 14 years of experience as an educational administrator. She is currently principal of the Carman Road School in Massapequa, which serves 300 students with multiple disabilities.

“We are thrilled to have Ms. McNulty serve in this new capacity,” said Susan Bergtraum, president of the Nassau BOCES Board of Education. “She brings strong administrative skills and a passion for the students she serves. In addition, her time as a Nassau County school board member will prove invaluable.”

Prior to joining Nassau BOCES, she over saw the development of PS 277Q in Queens and served as principal of that school for three years. She supervised every aspect of the program, including facility development, the hiring of staff, the management of a multi-million dollar budget as well as the implementation of research-based curriculum for students with disabilities in grades Pre-K through 21years of age.
