It’s all smiles for Bayview Avenue students

Students from Freeport Public Schools’ Bayview Avenue School of Arts and Sciences are showing off their pearly whites after receiving free dental services during Give Kids a Smile Day.

In partnership with the Nassau County Dental Society, students from kindergarten to fourth grade received free dental exams and fluoride treatments for all students, and sealants for third and fourth grade students, with parental permission.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Bayview Avenue students and school nurse Lisa Rabinowitz, in conjunction with the event organizer Dr. “Joe” Brofsky, were the faces for the dental wellness day and helped to create the dental video shown during past events, which were held at the Cradle of Aviation Museum. This year, Dr. Brofsky wanted to bring the event to Bayview to ensure students could receive free dental care.

Donning red shirts for the event, students from different grade levels were called at specific times to the school’s gymnasium, which was transformed so dentists and dentistry students could perform their dental services in a familiar child-friendly atmosphere.

Following their cleanings, students went outside to the school’s playground to learn more about the importance of daily dental hygiene. A puppet show station taught students how to properly brush their teeth, a nutrition station explained how certain foods can be good or bad for dental hygiene, and students got to meet and dance with special guests Superman, the Tooth Fairy, Cookie Monster and Mr. Met.
