The Freeport Public Schools Board of Education meeting on March 16 was full of proud administrators, staff and community members as the board of education honored Class of 2000 alumnus, former Freeport High School football linebacker and dedicated community member Mr. Eddie “Truck” Gordon for this outstanding work and dedication to enhancing the lives of students in the Freeport community.

Eddie Gordon, a champion for the betterment of Freeport Public School students and their families, was recognized for his many services to the community including the free, community FitFam gym and working with students through the Eddie “Truck” Gordon Foundation.

“We are honoring Eddie for something very special – being a champion and inspiration for so many in our community, most importantly, our Freeport students,” said Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kishore Kuncham. “In such a very humble way, he unlocks our students’ superpowers, making sure they have the winning attitude to achieve whatever they want in their lives. He has changed lives and is a true changemaker in our community. Thank you for everything you do for us.”

At the meeting, Gordon received a plaque from the district and was provided with a Freeport football team letterman jacket by Dr. Kuncham, which was an exact replica of the jacket from Gordon’s senior year as co-captain of the Red Devils varsity football team and something he did not have from his football career at Freeport High School.

“There is something special about the people who live and work in this community,” said Gordon. “This jacket means so much more to me than just sports. I model my life off the ethics that I learned from this school, my teachers and my coaches and that is why it is an honor for me to coach the youth of this community. I am truly passionate about the lives I can impact, change and touch and I could not image doing it in any place other than Freeport.”

In 2000, his senior year, Gordon led the Freeport High School football team to the Long Island Championship by making the game winning tackle in overtime. He was the co-captain of the undefeated team which was also voted as the Rutgers Cup Winner in the same year. In addition, Mr. Gordon earned All-State and All-Long Island recognitions.

The Freeport Board of Education, Superintendent of Schools, administrators, staff and students congratulated Mr. Gordon on the distinguished honor of being named a Freeport Public Schools Unsung Hero.
