Liberty asks residents to conserve their water

With exceptionally high temperatures and an unusually low amount of rainfall, Liberty New York Water says that water usage, primarily lawn maintenance, among Long Island residents has peaked in recent weeks. Liberty urges Long Island residents to follow local irrigation ordinances and shorten irrigation cycles to prevent an increase in water demand. Long Island’s recent water usage could lead to a water shortage in the event of an emergency such as a fire.

“We’re asking residents to shorten their irrigation cycles to offset the increase in demand due to the dry weather,” Chris Alario, President of Liberty New York Water, said. “A small change in routine could help maintain adequate water pressure for fire protection and other essential services, ultimately helping to save lives in an emergency.”

Liberty reassures Long Island residents that they can still enjoy lush lawns while helping to protect the water supply. They request that residents only water their lawns during the even and odd country ordinances and to avoid all watering between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., as these are peak evaporation times. Other tips include lowering the irrigation system’s watering per zone by five minutes, a personal assessment of lawn moisture so as to not overdo anything, using a Smart Irrigation Controller, and taking showers instead of baths.

“We are grateful for our customers’ partnership in helping manage our water resources,” Alario added. “We thank them in advance for doing what they can to make smart water usage choices.”
