East Rockaway celebrates homecoming

East Rockaway High School students, families and fans celebrated during its annual Homecoming Weekend on Sept. 19 and 20, in coordination with the Village’s Stars and Stripes Festival.

The festivities began with a parade at starting at the Capital One bank parking lot on the corner of Baisley Avenue, and continued down to the high school gym for the annual pep rally in advance of the following day’s football game.

The annual Louis Cosenza Scholarship Game was held on Sept. 20, at East Rockaway High School. The Rocks fell to Seaford by a final score of 58-14. After the game head coach Russel Pajer said that the was “proud of all my kids on the team. They fought hard, worked hard, and never gave up.”

The scholarship is in memory of Louis Cosenza, who was a health/physical education teacher at East Rockaway High School when he was stricken with leukemia in 1971, when Cosenza, an outstanding teacher, class advisor and coach, was 31 years old. He taught at ERHS for six years. The scholarship is given to a senior who has excelled in the classroom and on the athletic field.

Joe Valen and Samantha Partos were named the Homecoming King and Queen as part of the weekend’s celebration.
